The Kumon Handsworth Wood centre opened in 2009 and provides the unique Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes to children of all ages and ability. The centre has nurtured programme completers as young as ten, and the Instructor has a team of six assistants who have a combined total of over forty years of experience in education. This friendly and professional team ensure the centre is well organised and are able to play close attention to the needs of each student.

The centre has a young learners’ section, an independent study section and a higher level section, all to ensure that staff to student ratios are suitable.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Kumon goes one step further than traditional tuition providers by developing students into motivated learners and giving them the study skills they’ll need for school, university and beyond.

The Kumon Programmes provide a fantastic base for all examinations; including SATs, 11+ and GCSEs; and give every child the skills to be able to build on their existing knowledge and work logically, quickly, and efficiently. Instilling resilience and confidence to try new and advanced work, Kumon students also become used to being tested under timed conditions as they progress through the programme.

Children are encouraged to read daily, and we have an onsite library which they can borrow books from. In addition, there is a mobile library service opposite the centre on Beechglade Road operating monthly. We are extremely fortunate to have ample parking onsite and local street parking. There is also an adjacent play area.

About the Instructor

Handsworth Wood - Narjis Shah

My name is Narjis Shah and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Handsworth Wood Study Centre.

I first heard about Kumon in 2003 when my nephew began studying the programme. I got to see firsthand the benefits of Kumon as he developed and grew into a capable and motivated independent learner.  His progress inspired me so it’s no surprise that I jumped at the opportunity to become a Kumon Instructor.

I went on to open the Handsworth Wood study centre in 2009. Operating the centre and making a positive contribution to the local community for nearly 15 years has been an absolute pleasure, and it is especially important to me as I have lived in this area for most of my life.

As a parent with children who study with Kumon, I can see how Kumon has helped them to feel confident and inquisitive, both at school and in day-to-day life. I see the same changes in my students as well. This highlights the beauty of the Kumon Programmes, and how they are beneficial for all students as the work is set by ability, not by age.

As an Instructor, I get a thrill from seeing children learning independently, using examples and building on their existing knowledge to solve problem and take an active part in their own education. I have always had a passion for education and love to see children do well, not only academically but also personally, bolstered by encouragement and support. Being a longstanding Instructor, I have seen so many children grow in confidence and, for me, that is the most beautiful aspect of my profession.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
