The Kumon Stourbridge Study Centre was established in 2005.

We currently support pre-school, primary and secondary school aged students, and students beyond school age. Similar to other tuition providers their maths and English abilities will improve and in addition develop the study skills, confidence and can-do attitude vital to success.

Kumon, however, should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work. These skills will support children to easily grasp new topics in school and approach examinations such as SATs, GCSEs and their 11+ exam in the most effective and efficient ways.

In 2015 the centre started to work closely with local schools and was invited to move into Pedmore Technology College. Here the centre has grown and is well known among the local community supporting over 200 local children pursue their potential by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

The centre is recognised as a forerunner in building strong working relationships with local schools. We have had huge success in particular with Ham Dingle Primary School. Monitoring pupils’ progress together has had a positive impact on their development and helped the school and centre to understand how we can both complement each other. We have jointly presented to head teachers and other Kumon Instructors from around the UK, sharing our working relationship to encourage other like-minded educators to work together. We were recently nominated for a Midlands Education Awards.

Students can attend the centre up to twice a week, for around 30-40 minutes per subject; here they will be introduced to new concepts and supplementary activities to support their homework which is completed daily.

Did you know, you can now study Kumon using digital worksheets? This study centre is proud to offer KUMON CONNECT. Click here to find out more.

As an Ofsted registered centre, parents can make considerable savings through various schemes.

About the Instructor

Hello, my name is Rina Patel and I am the Kumon Instructor for the Stourbridge Kumon centre. I have a degree in Biological Sciences and a master’s in Statistics. Prior to becoming a Kumon Instructor, I worked as a Research Scientist for 12 years before taking a career break to spend more time with my children.

Like you, I care about my children's education enormously and I have experienced first-hand how the Kumon programmes can help children excel. Both of my children were advanced Kumon students; it instilled in them a desire to do better and the will to work independently to achieve their goals.

I take pride in providing a tailor-made programme as unique as each child. It is very rewarding to see children progress through their Kumon journey, unleashing their full potential with confidence.

As well as myself I have a team of handpicked classroom assistants who are talented in either maths or English or have/are studying advanced levels within the Kumon programmes.

My adult assistants work with our early learners on their mental arithmetic skills and reading. By having a multifaceted range of assistants, it helps the students to be mentored by a team of high achieving individuals.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
