The thriving centre provides an enjoyable and friendly learning environment in which students are encouraged to develop their study skills and grow in confidence. It attracts students from the local neighbourhood and students who travel from East Grinstead, Horley, Copthorne and the surrounding villages.

Students of all ages and abilities are welcomed at the centre. Many of the students have been studying here for a number of years and, at present, they range in ages from four to 16 years old.

Along with the Instructor, Sarah Hirst, the centre's experienced team of trained assistants are on hand to provide guidance where necessary. They work together to consistently encourage every student to become the confident, capable and achieving individual they can be.

The unique Kumon Maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study. Kumon should not be considered a traditional tuition provider as, rather than ‘teaching’ students, we encourage them to become independent learners who feel confident in their own abilities and able to face unfamiliar work.

Did you know, you can now study Kumon digitally? This study centre is proud to offer KUMON CONNECT. Click here to find out more.

Please note: Wednesday classes will run at Milton Mount Community Centre, Milton Mount Avenue, Crawley, RH10 3DY.

About the Instructor

A warm welcome to the Crawley, Pound Hill Study Centre. My name is Sarah Hirst and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2010.

I am a trained teacher and passionate about learning. Working with children and teaching were definitely where my heart laid. Following the arrival of my first son, I began to look into options that would allow me to combine my love of teaching with family life. A friend of mine had recommended Kumon as her son had excelled in maths and English after following the programmes. She was so impressed with the results that I had to find out more! The more I learnt about Kumon, the more I was convinced too.

Since starting my centre, I have witnessed these benefits for myself, and they have far exceeded my expectations. Helping children not only with maths and English skills but also with concentration, study skills, motivation and crucially, confidence too. I feel that being a Kumon parent as well as an Instructor has given me a unique perspective and added empathy.

I thoroughly enjoy helping children to develop their study skills and grow in confidence to achieve their potential.

I would be delighted to welcome you to our centre.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
