About our centre

The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes offer what traditional tuition gives to your child and more. Kumon goes one step further by helping each child develop self-learning skills, enabling them to tackle challenging work without reliance on a teacher. Our aim is to help any child of any ability to progress and develop a curiosity and love for learning.

Your local Instructor will set work for your child at just the right level, enabling them to build confidence in their abilities and progress their maths and English skills in small, manageable steps through daily study. They will visit their local study centre twice a week for sessions with their Instructor. This allows the Instructor to tailor and adapt each child’s study plan to their abilities, through observing their progress and fluency at each level. Our study programmes are individualised to each child to help them establish strong learning foundations and a positive learning experience, to build skills and confidence for their future.

About your Instructor

My name is Maisie Earle and I opened the Higham Hill Study Centre in September 2012.

My career, of over 28 years, has taken me all round the world. It allowed me to work with and appreciate the aspirations and ambitions of people from varying cultural, economic and social backgrounds. It was through my work that I developed a passion for instruction, helping others (mainly adolescents and mature adults) to develop skills that would later allow them to reach their true potential.

I was introduced to Kumon in 1996 by my sister, who had enrolled my niece. What I liked most about the programme was that it encouraged disciplines such as daily study, repetition and “practice makes perfect”. Needless to say, all of my children have benefited from studying with Kumon and have faced very different personal challenges along the way.

Being a Kumon parent for so many years and watching friend’s and relative’s children go through the programme has provided me with invaluable experience for my role as an Instructor. I have first-hand knowledge of the challenges parents and students face and can give practical advice on overcoming hurdles on their journey. More importantly, I am able to recognise stages of achievement and am in a position to actively encourage praise and reward at those vital stages.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
