The Kumon Warrington, Great Sankey Study Centre, established in 2004, is suitable for children of all ages and abilities. Currently, the youngest student at the centre is three years old and the oldest is 16.

The unique Kumon maths and English Programmes pursue the potential of each child by developing confident, independent learners through individualised, advanced study.

Young learners and new students work with an assistant to develop their study skills and concentration so that they are able to eventually study independently.

Initially each child is given a free assessment, the programme is explained in more detail and a study plan is made which allows the student to build on their current skills. Children can attend the centre up to twice a week. Class is an ideal environment for the instructor to observe and support each child, set new work and ensure that they leave the centre smiling and confident with the work they have covered.

Kumon does not provide tuition in the traditional sense; rather than teaching our students, we encourage them to learn as individuals, developing independent learning strategies to successfully complete new, unfamiliar work.

About the Instructor

Warrington Great Sankey - Jane Kerfoot

Hi, my name is Jane Kerfoot.

I first became aware of Kumon as a parent. My eldest son struggled to understand the basic concept of numbers and he wouldn't let me help him. I'm sure as parents you recognise this situation and you can appreciate exactly how I was feeling. I realised that he needed help, so when I saw a poster advertising Kumon, I decided to find out more about it and then proceeded to enrol him onto the programme. I started to see his understanding of numbers improve as well as his mental calculation. His confidence grew and I was delighted to see my son flourish.

Before becoming an Instructor, I worked in mainstream education teaching maths to secondary school children. Later I moved on to teaching basic skills at the local FE college to adults and school leavers as part of the "skills for life" programme. My role was essentially helping adults who had missed out on these basic skills.

Over the years I have instructed hundreds of students and watched as their maths and English skills and concentration improve. Every class I am surprised by what the children can do once they have been given the necessary skills and how much they grow in confidence when they realise they can do something that they once found difficult.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
