Books about holidays
Aug 2016
With the summer holidays slowly drawing to a close, the prospect of returning to school is becoming an increasing reality for children and young people across the country. Shops are already displaying their 'Back to school' essentials and summer holiday items are making their way into the bargain bins.
However, the joys of a holiday adventure do not have to stop just because school is soon to start. To keep the holiday happiness alive we have come up with a list of books about holidays to get stuck into.
Toot and Puddle by Holly Hobbie
Pigs Toot and Puddle both live in Woodcock Pocket and are the best of friends.
One day Toot decides to leave and embarks on adventure to explore the world. Puddle however chooses to stay at home. As Puddle starts to miss the presence of his best pig pal Puddle, he heads off on an adventure of his own in Woodcock Pocket.
Mr Gumpy's Outing by John Burningham
Mr Gumpy lives on a farm in the English countryside, just a short walk from the river. One fine, sunny day he decides to hit the water and go for a relaxing boat ride.
Gradually his dream of a relaxing day out becomes less realistic, as each barnyard animal begs to join him on his boat. Mr Gumpy agrees each time, on the condition that everyone behaves. Eventually two children also board the boat and, as it sets sail, the passengers do the exact opposite of what Mr Gumpy has asked.
Meerkat Mail by Emily Gravett
Sunny the Meerkat lives in an African desert with his family, who do everything together. Sunny finds it a bit too hot and overcrowded, so he decides to go on a round the world trip to visit his mongoose relatives.
He sends postcards home to his family (which make up the content of the book) that are initially positive and full of enthusiasm. However, as his trip continues, he stays with family who don't go to sleep, and another family that live in a swamp. After several unusual experiences, Sunny realises that his family are just right for him!
Swallows and Amazons by Arthur Ransome
The four Walker children - Captain John, Mate Susan, Able-Seaman Titty, and Ship's Boy Roger - set sail on the Swallow river whilst on their holidays and head to Wild Cat Island. On the island they embark on wonderful adventures, camping under the open skies, swimming in the clear water and going fishing for their supper.
Their adventures are interrupted by the Blackett sisters, who are known as the fierce Amazon pirates. The rival sibling gangs decide to battle it out, ensuing a summer of unforgettable memories.
We love these books as they truly capture the excitement that can be found in any adventure, whether it be in a new environment or on your front doorstep! So, although the new school term may feel near, why not extend the holiday fun and pick up one of these books for a good read? They all feature on the Kumon Recommended Reading List, which also contains a magnitude of other wonderful reads that will take you on an excellent adventure. Enjoy the rest of your summer holiday!
