About our centre

The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes offer the additional learning that traditional tuition gives your child and more. Kumon goes one step further than traditional supplementary education providers by helping each child develop self-learning skills, enabling them to tackle challenging work without relying on a teacher. Our aim is to help children of any ability to progress and develop a curiosity and love for learning.

Your local Instructor will set work for your child at just the right level, enabling them to build confidence in their abilities and progress their maths and English skills in small, manageable steps through daily study. They will visit their local study centre up to twice a week for sessions with their Instructor. This allows the Instructor to tailor and adapt each child’s study plan to their abilities, through observing their progress and fluency at each level. Our study programmes are individualised to each child to help them establish strong learning foundations and a positive learning experience, to build skills and confidence for their future.

About your Instructor

My name is Varunika Shekhawat and I have been a Kumon Instructor since March 2020. Having served as a Kumon Classroom Assistant for four years beforehand, I have an in-depth knowledge of the Kumon Method and an absolute dedication to helping children reach the best results possible.

As a Kumon Instructor, I am passionate about empowering students to become self-learners and reach their full potential. With a deep commitment to Kumon's philosophy of nurturing independent learning abilities, I strive to create a supportive and encouraging environment where students can develop a love of learning.

Through the Kumon Method, I guide students in mastering fundamental skills in maths and reading, instilling confidence and a strong academic foundation. With vast experience of working with students of different abilities and aptitudes, I tailor my approach to each individual student, ensuring they progress at their own pace while being constantly challenged to reach new heights. I love to make the learning experience fun and rewarding – I take pride in witnessing my students’ progress and celebrating their achievements, big and small.

I'm assisted by a team of well-trained and friendly staff, and together we provide a warm and inspiring environment for all students at the centre. I look forward to welcoming your child to join us at the Kumon Croydon, Shirley Study Centre.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
