About our centre

The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes enable children of any age and ability to build key learning foundations. Our programmes will not only help your child to become a confident learner, they go one step further than traditional maths or English tuition by equipping them with the skills to learn for themselves. Self-learning is an important skill for children as they journey through education and beyond, building independence and ability to progress without reliance on a teacher. Our study programmes provide an economical way to equip your child with the skills that they need to build a bright future.

At the Kumon Edgbaston Study Centre, we have a dedicated team of assistants with a large proportion having qualifications within the Education sector. We have a highly experienced and ‘Early Years’ qualified assistant who supports our ‘Early learner’ students with developing their number skills, reading ability and pencil hold and control. The students who attend the Kumon Edgbaston Study Centre range from three years old to secondary school age. Our students attend a wide range of schools within the local Edgbaston area extending out into the city centre of Birmingham and Balsall Heath.

Bernadette Quigley

About your Instructor

My name is Bernadette Quigley and I am the instructor at the Kumon Edgbaston Study Centre. I have a wide range of experience within Education from being a qualified secondary school teacher to managing a pre-school for children ranging from the ages two to four years old. After working at Kumon for seven years, I witnessed many students make great progress and overcome challenges with a positive attitude. Parents would feedback to me that ‘they never thought it was possible’, and it was this amazement in the Kumon Method and programmes that led to the desire to be an Instructor in my own centre.

I have a lot of experience within the ‘Early Years’ levels of the programme and have been able to support hundreds of students learn to read, hold a pencil with control and recognise, write and use numbers effectively.

My favourite part of being an Instructor is observing those key changes where a child has made a real development. An increase in confidence, a boost in their speed or working independently using the examples on the worksheets, are all moments where I can see the first-hand benefits of Kumon.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
