About our centre


Welcome to the Kumon Edinburgh, Corstorphine Study Centre.

At our centre, we utilise Kumon’s proven individualised learning method to create strong foundations in maths and English. As an Elite Instructor, I have an unwavering commitment to excellence, with a solid reputation for delivering high-quality education and personalised support, evidenced by the exceptional progress achieved by our students.

We are dedicated to empowering every child to achieve their full potential through customised programmes. Our unique approach allows students to begin their Kumon journey from their individual starting point and progress at a pace that suits them. This tailored methodology fosters success, enabling students to exceed their expected grade levels while gaining confidence and becoming independent learners.

Open communication with parents is a priority, ensuring that learning objectives are met. We encourage students to attend two classes per week, available in-person, online, or through a combination of both. We take pride in celebrating our students' achievements with regular award and merit ceremonies.

Whether your child needs support to catch up, aims to excel beyond their current level, or wishes to develop lifelong learning skills, my team and I are here to provide the guidance and resources necessary for success. Our dedicated team comprises in-centre and online staff who are passionate about supporting student development. This includes experienced educators, Kumon parents, current students who serve as mentors, and accomplished programme completers who inspire our learners. Together, we strive to make a meaningful impact on each child's educational journey.

About your Instructor

I am Kanika Paterson, and it is my privilege to serve as the Kumon Instructor at the Kumon Edinburgh, Corstorphine Study Centre. I have been the Instructor for three centres in Edinburgh, Corstorphine study centre since 2019; Leith since 2021 and Currie, which opened in 2025. I am proud to be considered an Elite Instructor, ranking amongst the top 15 Kumon centres across Europe and Africa. Before this role, I gained valuable experience as an area manager within the Kumon Scotland region.

My journey as a Kumon Instructor began in 2004 as a founding member of Kumon India, where I established the first centre and later became an Instructor in New Delhi. Throughout my career, I have had the privilege of receiving training in various countries.

As a Kumon Instructor, my commitment lies in nurturing the academic growth and confidence of every student through a tailored approach to learning. My mission is to empower students to develop independent study skills and a solid foundation in maths and English, helping them unlock their full potential. By instilling discipline, self-directed learning habits, and resilience, I strive to ensure that students enhance their academic performance while cultivating a genuine love for learning that will accompany them throughout their educational journey and beyond.

I am truly passionate about fostering confidence and inspiring a lifelong love of learning in my students. With extensive experience working with children, I possess the expertise necessary to uncover their unique abilities and potential. I wholeheartedly advocate for Kumon as a transformative platform that cultivates confident, resourceful learners capable of excelling in any field they choose.

Frequently Asked Questions

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
