The Kumon Maths and English Study Programmes offer what traditional tuition gives to your child and more. Kumon goes one step further by helping each child develop self-learning skills, enabling them to tackle challenging work without reliance on a teacher. Our aim is to help any child of any ability to progress and develop a curiosity and love for learning.

Your local Instructor will set work for your child at just the right level, enabling them to build confidence in their abilities and progress their maths and English skills in small, manageable steps through daily study. They will visit their local study centre up to twice a week for sessions with their Instructor. This allows the Instructor to tailor and adapt each child’s study plan to their abilities, through observing their progress and fluency at each level. Our study programmes are individualised to each child to help them establish strong learning foundations and a positive learning experience, to build skills and confidence for their future.

About your Instructor

My name is Aliyyah Zafar and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Ilford Lane Study Centre. I have over ten years of experience in Kumon, having started as a Kumon student myself, which subsequently led onto getting my first job as a Kumon Class Assistant. My progression in Kumon grew as I worked extremely hard from Senior Class Assistant to Centre Manager. It was always my dream to have my very own Kumon centre and with the experience and knowledge gained overtime I became a Kumon Instructor.

Kumon has always been an integral part of my life, and I have witnessed first-hand how it has helped me to grow and develop as an individual, as well as witnessing students blossom whilst working as a Class Assistant. As a Kumon student I went from having such little confidence in my own abilities to surprising myself with achievements that I would never have thought possible.

What is rewarding for me is going home knowing that I have given my greatest effort into helping each of my students to achieve their goals. Learning never stops and I am always working hard to be a better Instructor for my students. I have studied and experienced the Kumon worksheets myself, so I have an in-depth understanding of the programme.

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world.
