The Kumon maths and English Study Programmes aim to bring out the best in every child, regardless of age or ability and help them to reach their potential and foster a love of learning. Through individualised programmes with work set at just the right level, your child will be able to build strong learning foundations, not only developing ability in maths and English but transferable skills that will help them achieve across all subjects.

Children learn through example questions in our worksheets along with Instructor guidance. This method of learning offers so much more than traditional tuition: it nurtures your child’s independence, developing strong self-learning skills to give them the tools to help them excel in the future. Because Kumon does not follow the school curriculum and work is set according to ability, irrespective of age, our programmes allow learners both to fill in any missing gaps in their study foundations as well as the opportunity to work ahead of their school grade level. Your local Instructor will assess your child to determine at what point in the programme they should begin their Kumon study, then through daily work coupled with up to twice weekly study centre visits, they will build both self-confidence and crucial skills in small manageable steps.

About the Instructor

Instructor Liz Forrester of the Kumon Lowton Study Centre
Hello! My name is Liz Forrester and I am the Instructor at the Kumon Lowton Study Centre.

Whilst studying at school, from age 15 to 18, I worked as a class assistant at my local Kumon study centre. This was one of the most enjoyable, fascinating and fulfilling periods in my life because I was able to support the Instructor in providing students with learning support and encouragement.

I worked as a solicitor for 10 years, where I represented a diverse range of people of all ages and backgrounds as well as mentoring law students. Being able to meet their individual needs and expectations through my guidance allowed them to reflect, develop and refine their skills.

I am a mother of two boys and after becoming a parent, I decided that I'd like a change of career and thought I'd like to work in children's education. I take great interest in my own boys’ learning and with my educational experience, training to become a Kumon Instructor was the natural and obvious path for me.

I believe that the Kumon programmes are the right choice for every child, of every ability. It allows children to take control of their own learning and development under the guidance of an Instructor. They flourish not only in their education but in their interpersonal skills, confidence and self-motivation. It's wonderful to help and see a child grow, have pride in their work and light up when reaching their goals and fulfilling their potential.

If you would like to find out how Kumon can benefit your child, please get in touch and we can have an informal chat.

I look forward to welcoming your child to the Kumon family.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
