About our centre

Welcome to the Newark on Trent Kumon Study Centre, a place dedicated to enriching your child's learning experience!

Our centre offers comprehensive Math and English programs designed for students of all ages and abilities. Conveniently located in an educational room at the YMCA, we feature parking facilities and a café area as a waiting area for parents. Our Ofsted registered building is equipped with lifts for accessibility, ensuring every child can learn in a supportive environment.

At KUMON, we focus on developing essential skills like confidence, independence, and a love for learning through a tailored work-study approach. Our dedicated team, includes a senior assistant and a teaching assistant, here for support the instructor and provide personalized guidance for all students.

About your Instructor

My name is Sheila Abdulrasul and my journey into this role began when I found out my child was struggling academically. This realization highlighted a substantial shortage of support in the area, leading me from seeking a tutor for my child to pursuing the path of becoming a Kumon Instructor myself.

I became acutely aware of various educational gaps that affect student performance, particularly between high-achieving students and their peers. I recognized these disparities were not solely linked to curricular knowledge but also encompassed essential work and practical skills—all of which Kumon emphasizes in its educational philosophy.

I understand how important it is for your child to receive personalized support, and I create a learning environment where each child can thrive. My goal is to ensure that your child not only meets their academic goals but also gains confidence and a love for learning. Together, we can work towards helping them reach their full potential!

The most rewarding aspect of my role as a Kumon Instructor lies in the positive, nurturing environment we foster, which empowers students to excel beyond their school grade levels. Witnessing their growth and confidence in learning is immensely gratifying, and I’m honoured to be part of each child’s academic success and development.
 

Frequently Asked Questions

Both, and every child in between. This is because of our individualised approach to education, which always asks the question: "What is best for this individual child?" Following a diagnostic test, a study plan is set to develop the ability of the child and to progress them beyond the Kumon International Standard (an international approximation of their school level) regardless of their starting point. Kumon welcomes students with special educational needs, gifted and talented children, and all those who believe they can achieve more and fulfil their potential.

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
