KUMON CONNECT available Online Class available In-Centre Class available
Our Kumon Reading, Whitley Study Centre is situated in the bright and airy hall of the Sixth Form building at John Madejski Academy School, providing a tranquil and focused place to learn away from noises and distraction. The hall is thoughtfully arranged with individual desks for each student, ensuring a personal space where students are able to work independently while still feeling part of a supportive learning community.

Our dedicated team, lead by Instructor Shaofeng Liu and her experienced assistants, are at the heart of our warm and encouraging learning environment, working together to support the students’ academic development.

We welcome students of all ages and abilities – currently our students range from ages four to sixteen! They are from a variety of state and independent schools, from areas including Reading Whitley and Centre, Green Park, Coley Park, Southcote, Theale, Burghfield, Spencers Wood, Shinfield, Lower Earley and the Woodley.

Kumon’s personalised learning approach allows each student to progress at their own pace, with a focus on self-learning, critical thinking, and discipline through daily study at the centre and home. Kumon goes further than traditional methods of tuition by encouraging students to take learning into their own hands. Following a free assessment, a free trial is available, providing an opportunity to see the benefits the Kumon Method firsthand. Students begin the programmes at an individual set starting point and progress through the topics, allowing for consistent and gradual progress.

About the Instructor

Instructor Shaofeng Liu of the Kumon Reading, Whitley Study Centre
My name is Shaofeng Liu and, for the past five years, I have had the privilege of serving as a Kumon Instructor. In that time, I have been able to help hundreds of students achieve their maximum potential with the Kumon Maths and English Programmes, and have seen many students progress academically ahead of their school year group by 6-24 months.

My time at Kumon has been characterised by a deep commitment to fostering academic excellence and a passion for nurturing the potential of every student who walks through our doors. As a Kumon Instructor, I have worked with students of various ages and abilities, tailoring my Instruction to meet their unique needs and learning styles. I love my role and aim to make the centre as welcoming as possible to everyone.

I have considerable experience with early-years students and helping children with learning difficulties overcome their personal challenges to enable them to learn in a caring and supportive environment.

In recent years, my students have seen particular success when studying with me as they prepare for their 11+ examination.

I look forward to meeting with you and sharing the incredible results Kumon can provide with your family too!

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
