Welcome to the Kumon Richmond Study Centre.

The centre is based in a wonderful church hall with plenty of parking space.  There is a large hall for work and a small hall for parents to wait on site.

Most of the students come through personal recommendations and we have students ranging from pre-school to A level students. Over the years, the centre has become an integral part of the community.

Students come to class for different reasons; some find maths or English challenging or want to excel further. The centre is overseen by Mary and a wonderful team of dedicated staff.

One to one support is provided when required especially to pre-schoolers and students with special needs, but the main aim is to support the child’s individual and independent learning. Kumon encourages students to take ownership of their own work and the instructor and staff are there to provide guidance, support and encouragement to students.

About the Instructor

Hello, I’m Mary Ann Miao and I have been a Kumon Instructor since 2006, first as a parent, then as the instructor by taking over the centre where my children attended. Prior to this, I worked as a banker.

I am passionate about education and being able to help and support the children of the next generation; our leaders of the future. Both my children studied at Kumon from an early age, and over years I have seen the benefits and impact from the programme.

Kumon not only supports the education system but also teaches life skills.

I am lucky to be supported by a wonderful team of caring assistants as well as many of my past students in the running of the centre.

I look forward to welcoming you to the centre!

How long does study take?

The time taken to complete a day's work may be around 30 minutes per subject. The study time is down to each individual and their current study level. Class times displayed may include a combination of in-centre and online class sessions. Please contact your Instructor for further details.

Mary is a wonderful teacher who really cares about her students, it has been amazing to see my daughters confidence grow and her skills improve over the years. My son has been with this kumon centre for several years now. Over the years I’ve seen how his confidence and accuracy have grown. He is now several years ahead in maths at school. Mary is very caring and supportive and has ways to make my son understand some difficult concepts quickly and effectively. My son attended Kumon with Mary from Year 3. He was nervous in his assessment and Mary was nothing but patient and encouraging. As he progressed he became more confident and the constant repition really worked for him. His speed on timetables is still unbelievable! You do have to be committed and this does have it's own stresses. However, once he grasped the new section concept he never forgot it. He was very fortunate to have some 1-2-1 lessons. He is in top set Maths in secondary school now. Had it not been for Covid and the fact that his school is far away he would probably have studied with Mary for a few more years. Mary is a superb teacher and still interested in how he is progressing now.

Our daughter and son attended the Richmond Kumon centre, which in our experience is the best one as we had previously had experience of a few other Kumon centres. Richmond Kumon made a big difference to our children’s English and especially Maths ability. Our children started when they were 5 years old and Kumon gave them a strong foundation that they were able to build on. It really helped our children at school and boosted their confidence as their Maths ability and skill was 2 years ahead of their actual school year. Both our children sat the 7plus and the fact they had been attending the Richmond Kumon centre made a positive difference in terms of their ability, skill, knowledge, discipline, accuracy, speed and timing. Our daughter and son got offers from their first choice schools at 7plus. Mary who is the head of the Kumon centre in Richmond is a passionate and caring individual who wants the best for her students. Mary is able to spot and address the issues to help the children progress and openly provides advice on how the children can benefit fully from their time at the Richmond Kumon centre. Mary knew that our children would be sitting the 7plus and was very engaging, supportive and guided us in our journey. Kumon has really helped in primary school through to 11+ and getting into the best schools. We have continued Kumon through to secondary. The centre is very well organised and work is set at the correct level to stretch but not discourage. Highly recommended!

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
