The Kumon Southend Study Centre has been part of the local community for over 25 years, and offers maths and English study programmes to children of all ages. Our centre is proudly recognised as an Elite Kumon centre and has been ranked in the top 10 of all UK and Ireland centres.

Our students are a testament to how much daily Kumon practice supports their academic progress and are often at the top of their classes in school.

Our aim is to help children of any ability to progress and develop a love for learning, whilst the Kumon Instructor is always on hand to provide guidance, support and encouragement.

Following an initial assessment, a plan is made with the parents to build on the students' current skills. Work for the students is set at the 'just right' level, enabling them to build confidence in their abilities and progress their maths and English skills in small, manageable steps through daily study.

Classes run on Mondays and Tuesdays at the Christchurch Centre, where I am supported by a group of highly-trained Kumon assistants. The centre offers off-street parking and a waiting area. It can also be reached by bus along the seafront.

About the Instructor

Alison Wallace - Southend East Study Centre
My name is Alison Wallace and I have been the Instructor of the Kumon Southend centre for 22 years, where I’ve had the privilege to nurture thousands of local children from the local schools across the borough. I attended a local grammar school myself, and went on to obtain a degree in maths, working as an accountant before having four children.

I came across Kumon when one of my children was falling behind in maths and we joined Kumon to help support him. He developed confidence and a love for learning and he’s gone on to a career as a qualified quantity surveyor. As a Kumon parent, I could see the benefits of the programme reflected in my children’s school results and, when the opportunity arose I trained to become a Kumon Instructor myself.  I was excited to share my love of learning and maths with my other love – children!

I am proud to be an Elite Kumon Instructor, due to the high quality of instruction and student progress at my centre. I have received many awards for nurturing my students through the maths and English Programmes, many gaining places at grammar schools and finding academic success. We offer a high level of expertise in developing confidence, ability and potential in our students, enabling them to excel both at school and in any field they choose to study in the future.

Popular Questions

Kumon is a self-learning programme with each student receiving regular support from their Instructor. The carefully developed worksheets teach students how to find the answer for themselves, whilst their Instructor offers guidance when necessary. The key role of each Kumon Instructor is to observe their students working, either in the centre or their online class, making sure that work is set at the right level and that they are developing at the right pace.

Students can start learning with Kumon from age two upwards. We currently have students as young as two years old studying with us, ranging all the way up to those about to go to university; Kumon helps children of any age and any ability. The sooner children begin, the earlier they can start developing skills to gain the greatest cumulative benefit; as soon as you feel your family is ready to make the commitment to long-term study, Kumon will be ready to help you achieve your goal.

Kumon offers much more than tutoring and differs from traditional teaching in the classroom. Rather than preparing children for a particular test or assessment, Kumon empowers students to learn for themselves, through individualised instruction and carefully developed worksheets.

As well as developing key skills in maths and English, each Kumon student will work towards building their independent learning skills and confidence in their own abilities. This means that a Kumon student will not be dependent on – or limited by – the skills and knowledge of others.

As a global programme, Kumon does not follow a school curriculum, but rather is complementary to curricula across the world. The primary aim of the Kumon Method is to develop independent learning skills. These independent learning skills enhance the students’ performance right across the school curriculum. Kumon operates at exactly the right level for each student – regardless of their age – ensuring that work set extends and develops their skills, confidence and ability.
